What is a filly horse?

A filly is a young female horse that is typically three years old or younger. Filly horses are considered to be in the juvenile stage of development and are not fully matured. Filly horses may exhibit playful and energetic behavior as they grow and develop their agility and strength. Like colts, fillies can be trained for a variety of disciplines such as racing, jumping, dressage, or simply as a companion animal. Fillies can eventually mature into mares once they reach breeding age.
